Master of Education (M.Ed.) Degree Requirements
- Completion of a minimum total of thirty-three (33) graduate semester-hour credits, including eighteen (18) hours in Educational Leadership (or 27 hours plus a thesis).
- Completion of the following required common courses in Educational Leadership twenty-four (24) hours):
- EDLE 5013 School Organization and Administration
- EDLE 5023 The School Principalship
- EDLE 5053 School Law
- EDLE 5063 School Personnel Administration and Supervision
- EDLE 5093 Effective Leadership in School Settings
- EDLE 574V Internship (3)
- EDLE 599V Seminar: Analytical Decision Making (3)
- EDLE 599V Seminar: School Building Finance (3)
- Completion of nine (9) credit hours from a common core of designated three-hour courses required by the University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions, including:
- Either EDFD 5013 Research Methods in Education or EDFD 5393 Applied Educational Statistics
- Either EDFD 5373 Psychological Foundations of Teaching and Learning or EDFD 5473 Adolescent Psychology in Education or EDFD 5573 Life-Span Human Development
- Either EDFD 5303 Historical Foundations of Modern Education, EDFD 5323 Global Education, EDFD 5353 Philosophy of Education, or EDFD 5683 Issues in Educational Policy or EDFD
- A cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 on all course work is required for the degree. No grades below “C” will be accepted for graduate degree credit.
- Satisfactory performance on a written comprehensive examination or portfolio presentation is required.
Education Specialist (Ed.S.) Degree Requirements & Prerequisites
The minimum number of credits for the degree as stated in the Graduate School Catalog is thirty (30) graduate credits beyond the Master’s degree (or equivalent). The number of actual credits required is a function of the previous educational background of each student and his or her goals. Some students with substantial and relevant study at the Master’s level in Educational Leadership may complete the program with the minimum of thirty (30) graduate credits while others, especially those seeking to make a career change, may need substantially more work. In every case, the decision is left up to the student’s advisor and committee.
- Completion of eighteen (18) semester hours of prerequisite courses (or equivalent) if not previously completed at the master’s level. These courses consist of the following:
- EDLE 5013 School Organization and Administration
- EDLE 5023 The School Principalship
- EDLE 5053 School Law
- EDLE 5063 School Personnel Administration and Supervision
- EDLE 5093 Effective Leadership in School Settings
- EDLE 574V Internship (3 hours credit)
- EDLE 599V Seminar: Analytical Decision-Making (3 credit hours)
- EDLE 599V Seminar: Building School Finance (3 credit hours)
- Completion of fifteen (15) semester hours of the following educational administration core courses:
- EDLE 6023 School Facilities Planning & Management
- EDLE 6053 School-Community Relations
- EDLE 6093 School Governance
- EDLE 6103 School Finance
- EDLE 6173 School Business Management
- For students with no prior full-time administrative experience at the school district central office-level, completion, with advisor approval, of three (3) semester hours of: EDAD 674V Internship
- Complete the following course:
- EDFD 6403 Educational Statistics and Data Processing
(NOTE: Either EDFD 5013 or EDFD 5393 is a prerequisite to this course, as listed in “F” below.)
- Completion of a minimum of six (6) semester hours of advisor approved electives.
- NOTE: If you have not already satisfied the college core (3 credit hours from each areas listed below), you will need to complete the course(s) as part of your Specialist degree.
- Either EDFD 5013 Research Methods in Education or EDFD 5393 Applied Educational Statistics
- Either EDFD 5373 Psychological Foundations of Teaching and Learning or EDFD 5473 Adolescent Psychology in Education or EDFD 5573 Life-Span Human Development
- Either EDFD 5303 Historical Foundations of Modern Education or EDFD 5353 Philosophy of Education.
- Specialist project: An original project, research paper, or report on some topic relevant to the student’s interest and goals approved by the student’s advisory committee. Three (3) semester hours will be allotted for the specialist project.
- A minimum grade-point average of at least 3.25 on all course work presented as part of the degree program. No graduate degree credit will be granted for any course grades below "C".
- Satisfactory completion of all requirements governing the specialist project, research project, or report and comprehensive oral examination.
- Comprehensive oral examination: This will focus on the written specialist project.
- Completion time: The degree must be completed within six (6) years of enrollment in the program.
- Transfer credits: Relevant credits received from other institutions may be transferred upon approval of the candidate’s committee. Acceptance of transfer credit does not reduce the minimum residence requirement of thirty (30) weeks.
- Residence: A minimum of thirty (30) weeks of resident study is required. A student who carries twelve (12) or more credits a term receives fifteen (15) weeks residence credit; enrollment for less than twelve (12) credits in a regular semester or in a summer term results in one week’s residence for each hour of course credit.
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Degree Requirements & Prerequisites
- Completion of a minimum of ninety-six (96) graduate semester-hour credits (some programs may require more than the minimum of 96 hours), including a minimum of forty-eight (48) hours in Educational Leadership and at least eighteen (18) dissertation hours. At least thirty (30) graduate semester-hour credits must be completed beyond the Master's degree (or its equivalent), on the Fayetteville campus (not including dissertation and independent study). Anyone whose Master's degree was not completed at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, must complete a minimum of thirty-three (33) graduate semester-hour credits on the Fayetteville campus (not including dissertation and independent study).

- Completion of eighteen (18) semester hours (or approved equivalents) from a common core of designated three-hour courses required of all College of Education and Health Professions doctoral students, including:
- Either EDFD 5573 Life-Span Human Development or EDFD 5373 Psychological Foundations of Teaching & Learning
- Either EDFD 5303 Historical Foundations of Modern Education or EDFD 5353 Philosophy of Education
- EDFD 5013 Research Methods in Education
- EDFD 6403 Educational Statistics and Data Processing
Three (3) hours to be selected from the following advanced-level research and statistics courses:
- EDFD 6413 Experimental Design in Education, EDFD 6423 Multiple Regression, EDFD 6453 Qualitative Research, or
- EDFD 6993 Seminar: Survey Research Methods and EDFD 6623 Techniques of Research in Education
- Completion of a minimum of nine (9) graduate semester hours of approved electives from a related field outside Educational Leadership.
- Completion of one of the four residency requirement options
- A minimum grade-point average of at least 3.25 on all course work presented as part of the degree program. No graduate degree credit will be granted for any course grades below "C."
- Satisfactory completion of all requirements governing the written and oral examinations for the candidacy examination, the dissertation, and the final oral dissertation defense.
- The Ed.D. degree must be completed within seven (7) years from the date the Declaration of Intent is signed.
